Aquafarms who was planning on building a fish farm on the Samoa Peninsula wants Humboldt County to pay for cleaning up the brownfield left by the Samoa Pulp Mill. They point to the toxic nature of the site. In an article in the Eureka Times Standard July 23, 2019, the company is quoted as saying, "The last Samoa pulp mill closed in 2009, leaving behind hazardouswaste and contaminated soil on the property. These are “local risks that our projects normally would not have to deal with, and thus we would not incur costs on."
